Gresford Colliery Sports and Social Club, Bowling Section 1978 - 2010
The Gresford Colliery Bowling Club came to the fore in 1978, when the team was formed following the closure of the Turf Bowling Club (next to the Racecourse Football Ground) in 1977, when the green was made into a Car Park.
The green at the Colliery was not in a very good condition and interest in the bowls section was waning, so the whole of the old Turf side were invited to play for the Colliery Club.
Mr Peter Kirby of Kirbys Garage had paid for floodlights to be installed at the Turf green and these were transferred to the Colliery.
Mr Malcolm Parry who was groundsman at Brymbo, became involved at the Colliery and the green rapidly improved. Since that time Kevin Nicholas and Phil Baird have worked very hard improving the green to a very high standard, with Kev Nic and Granville Rogers and latterly Eric Challoner (2010) maintaining the good work.
Mr Billy Thomas was President of the Bowls Club when formed in 1978, followed by Tom Jones (coal merchant) and currently Arthur Gould ( Maelor Construction). Others who put in a tremendous amount of work in the early years were secretary Harry Jones, Eddie Jones, and Ken Edwards, Chairmen - Merwyn Williams, Harold Davies, Don Hughes and Warren Hughes ( Club Secretary). Tom Roberts took over as secretary in 1981, followed by Christine Nicholas, Dave Owen and currently Amanda Nicholas.
A B team was formed in 1978 and duly won Div.2, only to drop out the following year. This has happened a number of times over the years as you can see from the Honours list, and although this team enjoys success for one reason or another the team folds, only to spring back again after a few years.
In 1982 the club entered a team in the
In 1984 the Welsh Counties League was formed, which we won that season, and have performed well in this league to date.
Current Chairman is Merwyn Williams who succeeded Dewi Jones, both of whom have been chairmen on numerous occasions, and have been stalwarts of the club for years, together with Tom Roberts, Kevin Nicholas, Amanda Nicholas, Granville Rogers, Andrew Hughes, Dave Morris, Dave Haslam, K.P.Jones, and many other members.
The Clubs current sponsors are L.M.E., Maelor Construction, ADG, Pat Derorsa, Ady Jones, and Carlesburg, to whom we are very grateful. Also Glyn Parry the Colliery Club Secretary who works very hard, and has been a great help to the Bowling section over the years.
This year 2010 there have been some big improvements to the green, due to Tom Roberts applying for various grants. The pavilion had been closed for the past 3 years due to being in a bad state of repair and requiring a complete refurbishment.
In June 2010, Chairman Merwyn Williams welcomed members, Chair of AVOW (grants), Gwersyllt Com.Council members, and sponsors to the re-opening of the Pavilion he thanked, Eric Chaloner (team leader) and his helpers, Granville Rogers, Dave Morris, Gwynfor Jones, Ian Roberts, K.P.Jones, Graham Prydden, Chris Wieck and project manager/treasurer, Tom Roberts, for all the hard work they have put in, improving the outside of the building as well as putting the finishing touches to the inside. Also Tim Halliwell for helping with the plumbing, June, Barbara and Amanda for cleaning up and kitchen duties. Thank you also to Amanda (secretary) and Kevin Nicholas (head groundsman, captain, handyman, etc.) who have worked very hard for the club for years.
Gresford Colliery Bowling Club are indebted to Merwyn Williams, for is input into the club and especially for the generous Donations he has given the club over the years.
All the players in the current Welsh
Counties Team have represented
Andrew Hughes has been captain of the Welsh Counties League team for the last 3 years and the team have been very successful, other current captains , Tom Roberts A team, Dave Morris B, Kevin Nicholas Flintshire team, K.P.Jones Pairs team, and Amanda Nicholas Vets team.
The club have been prolific winners over the years as well as finishing runners up many times.
The reason the club have not won as many trophies over the last 8 years is that the players tend to enter competitions at weekends and therefore we are unable to field a strong side every week.
Colliery Bowling Club has probably won more trophies than any other club in
